August 6, 2017 - Frontier League (FL) - Traverse City Beach Bums
CRESTWOOD, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(25-44) gutted out a back-and-forth win over the Windy City Thunderbolts(38-31), by a final score of 13-10, ending a twelve game skid.
With one out in the first inning, Jeremy Stidham hit his first home run as a professional as he crushed one over the left field walk. After a Steven Patterson walk, Will Kengor slammed a two run homer to straight-away center, his 14th of the year. Alexis Rivera followed with his own solo bomb to right giving the Bums a 4-0 lead.
The lead did not last long as Windy City scored six runs in their half of the frame. Keenyn Walker led off by blooping a double down the left field line. On the play, Will Kengor and Clint Hardy collided and were taken out of the game. Walker would later score on a fielding error, then Tim Zier would drive in two with a double and Blair Beck would clear the bases with a three-run double, giving the Thunderbolts a 6-4 lead after one.
In the fifth inning, Jeff DeBlieux led off with a single to right then, two batters later, Orlando Rivera singled to move DeBlieux to second. Alexis Rivera stepped up and slammed his second homer of the game, this time a three-run shot, giving the Beach Bums a one run lead. Windy City took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth when Larry Balkwill hit a two-run home run, making it an 8-7 game. The Beach Bums then retook the lead for good in the top of the seventh, sending ten men to the plate.
Orlando Rivera led off with a walk, Alexis Rivera singled, and Kendall Patrick reached on an error to load the bases. After Orlando Rivera was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a fielder's choice, John Montgomery cleared the bases with a double into the left field gap. Josh Hauser drove in Montgomery with a single and Jeff DeBlieux walked to continue the onslaught. Two batters later, Steven Patterson and Orlando Rivera each hit RBI singles to make it 13-8. Although Windy City scored single runs in the eighth and ninth, the Bums held on for the victory.
Both starters struggled in tonight's game so it was up to the bullpens, as Joel Tiribio earned his first win for the Beach Bums, improving to 1-0. He went 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks. Josh Glick suffered the loss for Windy City as he fell to 4-1. He gave up five runs on two hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning.
Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums and the Windy City Thunderbolts finish up this weekend's three game set. Reinaldo Lopez takes the ball for the Bums and Jake Fisher starts for Windy City. First pitch will be at 6:05pm(EDT) and the voice of the Beach Bums, Tom Willms, will go on the air with the Budweiser pre-game show at 5:45 on 101.9FM- The Bay.
