Bums Fall in Extras in Normal

NORMAL, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(14-26) dropped this week's series opener to the Normal Cornbelters(17-23), in eleven innings, 5-4.

The Beach Bums got on the board in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Will Kengor led off with a double to left. Two batters later, Steven Patterson hit a single to left, moving Kengor to third. Christian Santisteban then hit an RBI double to left, scoring Kengor. Gaby Juarbe followed with a grounder to second, scoring Patterson.

Normal cut the lead to one in the third when Santiago Chirino drove in Mitch Elliott, who reached on an error, with an RBI single to right. In the fifth, with runners on first and second and two out, Chirinio hit a single to right. R.J. Perucki headed to third, and Elliott went to second, but was caught in a rundown after rounding too far. Perucki headed for the plate and the throw to the catcher was late, tying the game at 2.

Patterson led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo HR to right-center field, his fifth of the season. Then, with two outs, Jeff DeBlieux doubled down the right field line. Marcos Derkes followed with a long fly ball to right that one-hopped the fence for a grounds-rule double, scoring DeBlieux, giving the Bums another two run advantage. In the bottom of the inning, with the bases loaded, Chirino drove in two runs with a single to right, tying the game again.

The game moved into the eleventh inning, with the international tie-breaker in effect, Giancarlo Brugnoni took his place at second. He moved to third on a Santisteban groundout but the Bums couldn't bring him home. In the bottom of the inning, Elliott was placed on second. He was sacrificed to third by Mike Fish. Then Chirino, with the infield in, grounded a ball to short but it was bobbled, and Elliott scored to win the game for Normal.

Race Parmenter got the win, going the final two innings, allowing a hit, a walk, and striking out three. He improves to 2-1. James Ball suffered the loss, allowing the unearned tie-breaker run, dropping 0-2. The Beach Bums relievers combined to pitch the final four innings, allowing no earned runs, just two hits, two walks, while striking out five.

The Beach Bum and Normal Cornbelters play game two of this three game series, tomorrow night. Sasha Kuebel gets the start for the Beach Bums and Chris Carmain goes for Normal. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 7:15pm, on 101.9- The Bay.

Don't Forget- Coming up on Friday, July 1st, the Tropic Beauty Models will visit Wuerfel Park. Come on out and meet the girls and we will also have another FANtastic Fireworks show following the final pitch of the game against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch will be at 7:05pm and the gates open at 5pm.

The Beach Bums business offices are open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Sponsorships, season tickets, group packages, patio tables, and suite, are all currently available for the 2016 season. The Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
