AVON, OH - The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-21) lost the opener of this weekend's three series with the Lake Erie Crushers(15-14), by the final score of 7-2
Lake Erie started in the bottom of the first inning when Carlos Avila led off with a single and come in to score on Jose Barraza's RBI single to left. The Beach Bums didn't take long to tie the game when, in the top of the second, Steven Patterson hit a single with one out. He moved to second on a Gaby Juarbe single, then scored on a Brian Portelli base hit to left. The Crushers retook the lead in the bottom of the inning. Scott Carcaise led off with a double that hopped over the wall, then Parker Norris bunted down the 3rd base line but Juarbe's throw to first went wide, allowing Carcaise to score. Two batters later, Bryan De La Rosa hit a sacrifice fly to center, making it 3-1.
In the third, Ryan Bottger led off with a double, then moved to third on a Casey Rodrigue groundout. Jose Vargas then grounded out to short, scoring Bottger and cutting the deficit in half. Barraza led off the bottom of the frame with a walk then Eric Grabe smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall, his first of the season, to make it 5-2. After a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Lake Erie added to their lead with a single run in the sixth on an RBI single by De La Rosa. In the seventh, it was Carcaise's turn with an RBI triple that scored Barraza, who walked to start the inning.
Lake Erie starter Jordon Krauss picked up the win to improve to 2-2, as he went six innings, spreading out nine hits and striking out three. Jacob Lanning is saddled with the loss for the Beach Bums. He went five and 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks. He falls to 2-4.
The same two teams battle again tomorrow night for the middle game of this three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.
Coming up on Tuesday, June 21st, it will be another Two for Tuesday event as the Beach Bums host the Washington Wild Things. The Traverse City Beach Bums are working in conjunction with the Alzheimers Association of Traverse City to try and paint the park in purple in order to help bring awareness to Alzheimers. Bring the whole family and sign up for the Walk to End Alzheimers, help spread awareness, and show your support for those affected by this mental illness
The Beach Bums business offices are open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Sponsorships, season tickets, group packages, patio tables, and suite, are all currently available for the 2016 season. The Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
