Jackson Generals News Release

Birmingham, Ala. - The Generals got seven scoreless innings of relief and a five-run outburst in the third inning to down the Birmingham Barons 5-1 Friday night at Regions Field. Aaron Brooks threw three shutout frames to pick up his first Double-A victory. With 79 wins, Jackson tied a Mariners-era record for victories in a season.

Jackson (33-19, 79-43) got all of its offense in the third inning. Down 1-0, Tyler Marlette and Ian Miller singled to put two men on before Benji Gonzalez tied the game with an RBI single to left. Tyler O'Neill quickly put the Generals in front with a two-run double to left-center that made it 3-1.

O'Neill's two runs batted in put him all alone in second place for RBI in a season for the Jackson Generals and West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. The slugger now has 94 RBI, putting him two ahead of Alex Liddi in 2010 and three behind Julio Zuleta in 1999.

The Generals continued pouring it on after O'Neill's big hit, getting consecutive run-scoring singles from Leon Landry and Ryan Casteel to make it 5-1. Jackson tied a season-high with six hits in the frame, including hits from the top five men in the lineup consecutively. All of the team's runs and six of their eight hits came in the frame.

Birmingham (18-35, 47-75) got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Keon Barnum drove in Trey Michalczewski with a double to give the home squad a 1-0 edge. In all three games this series, the Barons have scored their only run in the second inning.

After just two innings from Ryan Yarbrough, the Generals got a fantastic effort from a trio of relievers. Aaron Brooks (1-0, 5.51) pitched three scoreless frames to pick up his first win in Double-A. Kyle Schepel and Ryne Harper each pitched a pair of shutout innings behind Brooks to finish off the win.

Ian Miller singled in the third inning, extending his on-base streak to 25 games. Adam Law reached base, but went 0-for-3 to end his hitting streak at 11 contests.

The Generals tied a franchise mark with their 79th win of the season. In the ten years the team has been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners, Jackson has won that many games only once. The 2012 team, which featured 16 future Major League players, went 79-61. The all-time franchise mark was set by the 1999 West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, who won 84 games as a Cubs' affiliate.

The 2016 team goes for 80 victories in game four of the series Saturday night in Birmingham. Righty Paul Blackburn (7-5, 3.41) takes the ball for a sixth time with Jackson, while the Barons turn to right-hander James Dykstra (4-7, 5.49). First pitch is set for 6:30 pm CT and you can catch all the action on the TJ Network (AM 1390, FM 94.1) in Jackson and online via the TuneIn Radio App starting at 6:15 pm CT with the Pregame Show!
