Bullpen falters in eighth as MoonDogs come back to win

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Mankato MoonDogs 5-4 Friday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The loss puts Alexandria at 12-9 in the second half and 24-32 on the season.

The Blue Anchors got on the board in the first against Ricky Ramirez. Luke Petterson led off the inning with a double and he came around on a single from Dane Hutcheon giving them a 1-0 lead.

Troopsr Reynolds went deep for the second night in a row in the fourth inning. His solo shot put the Anchors up 2-0.

The MoonDogs got on the board against Jake Mattys in the seventh. Sulliam Rios-Reyes singled to start the inning and went to second on a sac bunt. Kyle Weston hit a two-out double bringing in Rios-Reyes to make the score 2-1.

Alexandria got some insurance in the seventh. Matt Hopfer walked to leadoff the inning. He went to third base on Ben Allen's base hit and the throw back to the infield got away allowing Hopfner to score the third run of the night. Josh Merrigan came in as a pinch runner for Allen and he went to third on a wild pitch. Hutcheon delivered an RBI single bring in Merrigan and making the score 4-1.

Mankato touched up George Faue in the eighth. Mikel Mucha singled with out out and went to third on Kevin Hall's double. Pinch-hitter Brinn Bell hit a double off the left field foul line to cut the lead down to 4-3. After a pitching change, Rios-Reyes walked to put two on. Brinn stole third and would come in on a squeeze bunt from Bono to tie the game at four. With Rios-Reyes on second, David Metzgar singled him in and the MoonDogs had the 5-4 lead.

Max Knutson threw six shutout innings allowing four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. Matths finished the night with one inning pitched giving up a run on two hits with one punch out. Faue pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing three runs on three hits with one batter struck out. Mitch Larson (1-3) took the loss pitching 2/3 of the eighth. He gave up a run on a hit and a walk. Thomas Watson threw a scoreless ninth with one hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Max Knutson (SP) - The lefty out of the University of Nebraska had one of his best starts of the season throwing six shutout innings. He struck out seven hitters, tying a season-high, for the third time this season.
