Bulldogs Fall to Heat 3-2 in Shootout

HAMILTON, ONTARIO - The Hamilton Bulldogs (5-2-0-3) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Abbotsford Heat (7-4-0-1) fought their way back into the game and edged the 'Dogs 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday evening at Copps Coliseum.

Bulldogs forward Justin Courtnall opened the scoring with his first career American Hockey League goal 1:46 into the first period, unassisted.

Less than three minutes later, Hamilton forward Martin St. Pierre extended his team's lead to 2-0 with his third power play goal in two games, with assists to defencemen Nathan Beaulieu and Magnus Nygren.

Just over one minute into the second period, forward Blair Jones got Abbotsford on the board with an unassisted marker.

With 1:03 left in the second, Jones struck again for the Heat, this time on the power play to tie the game 2-2. Assists on the play went to defenceman Drew MacKenzie and forward Max Reinhart.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, Abbotsford forwards Markus Granlund, Corban Knight and Jones scored in the shootout to seal the victory for the Heat.

Robert Mayer got the start in goal for the Bulldogs, making 34 saves on 36 shots in the shootout loss. Joni Ortio made 35 saves on 37 shots for the Heat in the win.

The Bulldogs went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Heat went 1-for-5.
