Buccaneers Tie Omaha with Less Than a Second Left, Win In Shootout 3-2

January 21, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers would tie the game with less than a second remaining in regulation and come away with a shootout victory to pick up a 3-2 overtime road win in Omaha Friday.

Des Moines controlled play for stretches of the first period but couldn't get any of their 11 shots on goal past Omaha goaltender Tommy Nappier. Defenseman Derek Hamelin took a puck up the right wing side and fired a shot in between the blocker and right leg pad of Buccaneer goalie Nick MacNab giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead at the 15:39 mark of the first period.

The Buccaneers were able to successfully kill off a 5-minute major in the second but a minute after getting back to full strength they took another penalty and Omaha's Filip Suchy scored on the power play just above the right circle to put his team up 2-0 8:46 into the period. Late in the period with the Buccaneers already on the power play Omaha was called for a 5-minute major and that set up the Buccaneers for 1:19 of a 5-on-3 going into the third period.

David Keefer would capitalize on the power play 1:10 into the third on a shot from dead center of the right circle that kissed off the crossbar and in with assists going to Mario Ferraro and Matt Jones. The Buccaneers would trail 2-1 with an offensive zone faceoff and just 3.0 seconds left and managed to tie the game with 0.3 seconds left as Chris Berger circled for a wraparound goal and banked it in off Nappier.

The Buccaneers got three of the four shots in overtime but neither side could score and we'd go to a shootout. In the second round of the shootout Omaha's Filip Suchy converted on a backhanded shot past MacNab's glove. Buccaneer Matt Jones would convert on a similar move on the backhand past Nappier's blocker and then Isaac Johnson scored in the fourth round as he snuck a puck past Nappier's left skate and in. Nick MacNab dove to his right to prevent Mitch Perrault from getting a shot off and preserved the 3-2 win. MacNab had 23 saves in the win while Nappier made 29 stop in the defeat.

Up next for the Buccaneers is a home contest with the Sioux City Musketeers in town on Saturday, January 21st. It's Thunder Stick Night with Tompkins Industries providing the first 1,000 fans with Thunder Sticks. For tickets call 278-2827 or online here.
