Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Des Moines Buccaneers never trailed on Wednesday night and thanks to an empty net goal finished off Sioux Falls on the road with a 4-2 victory.

Alec Rauhuaser got the opening goal just 4:07 into the game. James Gobetz and David Keefer cycled the puck to the defenseman who took a wrist shot from above the left circle through traffic that found the back of the net to give the visitors the 1-0 lead. Sioux Falls would tie the game in transition as an odd man rush found Carson Gicewicz with the puck and he beat netminder Nick MacNab at 11:19 of the first period. Des Moines would gain the momentum to end the period as a partial 2 on 1 developed and Ty Pelton-Byce took the puck into the zone from the left wing side and hit Zach Jordan in tight and Jordan fluttered a shot past the glove of Stefanos Lekkas at 17:08 of the first period to end the scoring and give the visitors the lead going into the locker room. Des Moines outshot Sioux Falls 13-12 in the first period.

Nick MacNab followed that up with 10 saves in the 2nd period, and none was bigger than one halfway through the frame when he kicked the puck out to James Gobetz who instantly fed it up to Wyatt Bongiovanni. Bongiovanni took the puck in from the left wing side and made a drop pass to Justin Howell who finished off the play with a goal, high over Lekkas' glove. The goal was reviewed but ruled a good goal. It was the only goal of the second period as both teams put ten shots on goal in the period.

Carson Gicewicz scored his second goal of the game in the third period at 10:21 to make it a tense finish, and with just over 2 minutes left Sioux Falls pulled their goalie in an attempt to tie it up. Ty Pelton-Byce was able to take the puck into the offensive zone and from the blue line had no one in his way, scoring into the empty net to preserve the Buccaneers 4-2 win.

Nick MacNab finished with 33 saves in the win, Stefanos Lekkas made 24 saves in the loss. Next up for the Buccaneers is a road game in Lincoln on Friday, March 4th, with puck drop at 7:05 PM.
