Buccaneers Make Nine Selections in Phase I of USHL Draft
May 2, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
The Des Moines Buccaneers made nine selections in Phase I of the 2016 USHL Draft Monday night. In all the Buccaneers picked four forwards, four defensemen and one goaltender.
Braden Costello, Stanislav Demin, Christian Stoever and Brady Ziemer were each taken successively in the first four rounds while Cam Knuble, Justin Engelkes, Antonio Andreozzi, Luke Robinson and Mathias Laferriere were selected in rounds six through ten respectively. Costello, Knuble, Engelkes and Laferriere are forwards, Demin, Ziemer, Andreozzi and Robinson are defensemen and Stoever is a goaltender.
When asked about the draft process, Buccaneers head coach Dave Allison remarked "I think it's a lot of hard work and everybody's excited about their draft."
Des Moines used the second overall pick on Braden Costello out of Red River High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. When asked about his thoughts on the draft, Allison was quick to offer some thoughts on his early round picks. "I think Braden Costello is someone that we identified and everything sort of fell together for us. We're really excited about him, we didn't think we'd get him if we didn't take him where we did, it's a prestigious spot but this kid has got character and he's got appreciation," explained Allison. He continued, "Then we took Slava Demin who we had rated very high, he's a real good puck mover and we all agreed that Christian Stoever is a top notch goaltender."
Allison noted that while the USHL is an older league, the Buccaneers selected Wyatt Bongiovanni in Phase I of the draft last year and admitted they didn't expect him to be as good and as USHL ready as he was and Bongiovanni played all season for Des Moines in 2015-2016, dressing in 57 of the Bucs' 60 games.
The USHL Draft will continue during Phase II on Tuesday, March 2nd at 8 AM Central Time.
