Bruins Rout Sound Tigers 7-3

Providence, R.I. - The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 7-3 this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Trent Whitfield, Christian Hanson, Jordan Caron, Kyle MacKinnon, Craig Cunningham, Jamie Tardif, and Lane MacDermid all scored in the win. Niklas Svedberg made 23 saves in the win, as the Bruins improved to 28-17-0-3 on the season.

The puck had just barely found the ice in the first when Bobby Robins and Blair Riley dropped the gloves off the opening faceoff. After an extended battle fed by screams of the crowd, Robins dropped Riley to the ice, and both players went off on identical fighting majors. Shortly after, the P-Bruins cashed in on the energy when Graham Mink fed a slick centering pass to Whitfield. Kyle MacKinnon added the secondary assist. The Providence captain was alone in front, and snapped it past Bridgeport goalie Kevin Poulin, putting the P-Bruins up 1-0 on his second goal of the season. The Providence lead was quickly cut short by a speedy pass from Brock Nelson that found the stick of Matt Donovan, who scored his eighth goal of the season to tie up the game at one. The game fell into a back-and-forth effort from both teams that even a Providence power play off a Nathan McIver slashing penalty couldn't lift. The game stood at a standstill until Bridgeport's Matt Watkins went off for hooking with two and a half to go, and Hanson wasted no time in putting Providence back in the lead. Hanson was fed from the corner by Jordan Caron, and put the P-Bruins up 2-1 on his sixth of the season. The secondary assist on the power play goal went to Colby Cohen. Providence gave Bridgeport no time to recover, and 30 seconds later struck again off a MacKinnon shot that brought the period to a close in a 3-1 P-Bruins lead. MacKinnon's goal was assisted by Matt Bartkowski.

Providence began an all-out assault early in the second, when Bridgeport's Nino Niederreiter went off for hooking less than a minute in. With the power play about to expire, Cunningham caught a pass from Ryan Spooner and ripped a shot from the right circle, putting the P-Bruins up 4-1. Torey Krug also assisted on the play. Less than four minutes later, Providence scored their fifth goal of the night. After a round of passing, David Warsofsky handed it off to Carter Camper, who then found Caron, and Caron tipped it past the left pad of Poulin, notching his seventh of the season. The fourth unanswered goal by the P-Bruins was the final straw for Bridgeport, and Poulin was pulled in favour of Kenny Reiter. Providence had two more power play chances, but were unable to score on either. A late slashing penalty by Whitfield gave the Sound Tigers a chance to mount a comeback, but despite their offensive surge, the second period ended in a 5-1 P-Bruins advantage.

Bridgeport again gave the P-Bruins an early chance in the third, with Brett Gallant going off for interference. Providence wasted no time in capitalizing on their good fortune, and Tardif scored his 25 th goal of the season, with assists from Camper and Krug. Soon after, Cohen got caught for a tripping penalty, but the P-Bruins were able to turn around and hang another goal on the Sound Tigers' Reiter. MacDermid came down the left side trailed by only a Bridgeport defenseman, and put the puck top shelf on a shorthanded goal. The score stood at 7-1 until late in the third, when Bridgeport starting fighting back. Sean Backman started the comeback, on a clean shot from the hash marks, and was followed by a shorthanded goal from Brendan DeFazio. The P-Bruins were handed another late-period chance on a second interference penalty for Gallant, but despite both teams' best efforts, the game timed out in a 7-3 Providence win.

Providence will travel to the Webster Bank Arena on Saturday, February 16, where they will complete a home-and-home with the Sound Tigers. They return to the Dunk on Sunday, February 17, to face off against Atlantic Division rival, the Worcester Sharks, for Stadium Cup Day. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free stadium cup courtesy of Cool Air Creations and Iron Workers Local 37.
