Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Michael Paez went 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and an RBI, while Gene Cone scored three runs as the Brooklyn Cyclones handed Vermont its sixth straight New York-Penn League loss with an 8-5 victory over the Lake Monsters Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning for the second straight night, this time loading the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles before a Peter Alonso sacrifice fly and Blake Tiberi RBI groundout. Vermont responded with a run in the bottom of the first on a Nate Mondou RBI single, but Brooklyn scored twice in the third on a Cone leadoff homer followed by back-to-back doubles from Paez and Colby Woodmansee.

Paez added an RBI double in the fourth and Jacob Zanon a sac fly in the fifth to increase the lead to 6-1 before the Lake Monsters scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. Vermont loaded the bases on a single and two walks before Tyler Ramirez greeted reliever Gabriel Feliz with a two-run line drive double to right. Two outs later Eli White plated Miguel Guzman to cut the Brooklyn lead to 6-4.

The Cyclones got a pair of unearned insurance runs in the eighth inning when Desmond Lindsay led off with a double and later scored on a three-base throwing error by shortstop White. Jay Jabs then followed with Brooklyn's third sacrifice fly of the game. Woodmansee collected three hits and an RBI, while Lindsay was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI for Brooklyn.

Cyclones starter Merandy Gonzalez (3-2) got the win despite being charged with four runs on six hits with six walks and four strikeouts over five-plus innings, while Vermont starter heath Bowers (2-5) gave up six runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss. Lake Monsters relievers Derek Beasley and Will Gilbert combined to allow just two unearned runs on two hits with four strikeouts over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Ramirez was 2-for-3 with the two-run double, while White and Luis Barrera each collected two hits in the loss for Vermont (17-23). The Lake Monsters have now lost six straight games, their longest losing streak since eight straight losses August 20-28, 2013.

Vermont will look to snap the losing streak and salvage one of the three games in the series with Brooklyn on Saturday starting at 6:05 p.m. The first 500 fans will receive a free Lake Monsters bucket hat courtesy of Blue Cross Blue Shield. -monsters- --001a1144d1feba71c20538d1696f
