Madison Capitols News Release
MADISON, WI - The Madison Capitols took down the Omaha Lancers, 3-2, as forward Alec Broetzman earns his second game-winning goal of the season in overtime on Saturday night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
Madison (4-5-0-0) is tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with eight points. Omaha (3-6-1-0) is ranked sixth in the Western Conference with seven points.
It was the overtime hero, Broetzman, who scored for the second time of the night to give the Capitols the victory. Forward Kamil Sadlocha fed a cross-ice feed to Broetzman who skated in from the right side on a one-on-one break with goaltender Vincent Purpura. Broetzman finished the game with a wrister on the glove side.
The Capitols opened up the scoring at 8:59 mark of the first period when Broetzman knocked in his fourth goal of the season. The play began with right wing Ryan O'Reilly forcing a turnover on the edge of the Capitols attacking zone. O'Reilly sent the puck cross-ice to Broetzman who skated up the left wing. The forward wristed a shot from 20-feet out and beat Purpura on his glove side.
The Capitols doubled their lead when Sadlocha took a slap shot from the blueline for his second goal of the season. Skating on the power play, the Capitols cycled the puck around multiple times before the Ohio State commit pulled the trigger from the right point and beat Purpura on his glove side as he was screened by Madison center Anthony Callin at 12:08 of the opening frame.
Following a scoreless second period, the Lancers scored their first of the night to cut the Madison lead in half, 2-1. The play began when forward Mick Kohler carried the puck through the Capitols zone and down the left wing. Kohler lost the puck and an attempted clear was blocked by defenseman Hunter Carrick, who quickly shot and buried the long distance bullet. The goal came at 1:36 of the third period.
At 11:28 of the third period, left wing Noah Cates dropped the puck back to defenseman Travis Mitchell at the left point. Mitchell rocketed the initial shot at McKay who halted the first shot, but the rebound was pushed home by Cates for the Duluth commit's second goal of the year to tie the game at 2-2.
McKay (4-4-0) earned his fourth win of the season by stopping 38-of-40 shots. Purpura (0-1-0) took his first loss in his season debut while stopping 27 saves on 30 shots.
Madison was 1-for-4 on the power play. Omaha went 0-for-5 with the man advantage
