Bridgeport Wins Rubber Match

(Bridgeport, Conn. - Sept. 13, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (30-29, 61-68) won a series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (33-27, 63-67) by defeating the road team 5-4 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thu9sday. Bridgeport is 8-11 against Southern Maryland and trails the Blue Crabs by two-and-a-half games in the second half Liberty Division standings.

Bridgeport scored one run in three straight innings from the third to the fifth frame. The final two tallies came in the seventh inning.

Prentice Redman drove in two runs with two doubles on Thursday. He is three shy of tying the Bluefish record set by Wes Bankston last season. Luis Lopez earned two singles, brought in one runner, and reached base three times. Eddie Rogers earned an RBI single in the third and Luis Rodriguez drove in another with a grounder to the shortstop in the fourth. Joey Gathright produced a double and a walk while scoring three times for the winning team. Willis Otanez and Brad Boyer earned one hit each for the Bluefish.

Southern Maryland's offense came from a Casey Benjamin solo homer to center in the fourth, a two-run single by Jeremy Owens in the seventh and a passed ball in the ninth. Owens and Benjamin finished with two hit nights while Kevin Rios reached three times on two hits and a walk.

Bluefish starter, Mike Ness (1-0), picked up his first victory in the Atlantic League as the righthanded hurler completed seven innings of three run, five hit, three walk and eight strikeout baseball. Julio DePaula allowed one hit and fanned two in a scoreless eighth. Rommie Lewis notched his fourth save of the season as the Bridgeport closer gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out one.

Blue Crabs starter, Nick Green, did not factor in the decision as the righthanded pitcher worked four-and-two-thirds frames while surrendering three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one. Two relievers combined for the final three-and-one-third frames with Charlie Manning (5-6) taking the loss. Bridgeport earned two runs on three hits and two walks with six striekouts.

Bridgeport starts a four game series against the Sugar Land Skeeters on Friday. First pitch is at 7:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. It is a Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Sabrett. Bridgeport will send southpaw Paul Oseguera (10-6, 2.56 ERA) to the hill against Sugar Land lefthanded hurler Jason Lane (8-4, 2.65 ERA).
