August 19, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) - Bridgeport Bluefish
(Bridgeport, Conn. - August 19, 2012) - Behind a walkoff base hit from Eddie Rogers and Paul Oseguera's pitching performance, the Bridgeport Bluefish (19-16, 50-55) swept the Somerset Patriots (18-20, 53-55) in a doubleheader at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday. Bridgeport earned a 4-0 victory in the first game and a 5-4 win in thirteen frames in the finale. The Bluefish now trail the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs by one-half game in the second half Liberty Division standings.
In game one, the Bluefish had an RBI double from Kennard Jones and run scoring singles from Brad Boyer and Luis Lopez to account for the only runs driven in. James Simmons scored as Joey Gathright reached on an error in the sixth to account for the other run. Willis Otanez reached base three times and had two hits while Prentice Redman produced two hits in the first contest for the winning team. Luis Rodriguez had the only other single in the opener.
Oseguera (9-3) picked up a complete game victory for the Bluefish as he tossed seven innings of five hit, two walk, and nine strikeout baseball. His team is 15-3 when the southpaw starts on the mound. Somerset hurler, Sean Green (3-6), suffered the loss as the starter worked a complete game while allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks while fanning seven.
In the final game of the day, The Bluefish scored two runs in the first inning, another in the third, one more in the fourth and a final tally in the thirteenth. With runners at the corners and one batter out, Rogers served a single over the head of leftfielder, Ryan Kiniry, to send Joey Gathright to the plate. The rally gave Chase Wright (4-1) his first loss of the season and made Dan Serafini (5-3) the winning pitcher.
Bridgeport starter, Jonah Bayliss, delivered four innings of one run, four hit, and five strikeout baseball. Rommie Lewis surrendered three runs on four hits and one walk while fanning two in the fifth. Julio DePaula, Juan Rincon, and Serafini combined for eight scoreless frames on one hit, four walks and eight strikeouts with the winning pitcher completing the final two innings.
Lopez had a three hit night and drove in a run while Otanez collected two hits and brought in a baserunner. Otanez scored twice in the contest. Redman reached base four times on two singles and two walks while Rogers and Jones were able to get on base three times for the winning side. Six of the nine starter had multiple hit nights.
The Bluefish start a four-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch.
