Lancaster Stormers News Release

Rainy Lara fired shutout baseball for seven innings on Thursday evening as the Bridgeport Bluefish completed a three-game sweep of the Lancaster Barnstormers with a 6-0 whitewash at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The loss dropped the Barnstormers to 1 1/2 games behind idle Southern Maryland in the Freedom Division race.

Lara (5-2) yielded four hits and a walk in his seven innings. Only Vladimir Frias with a leadoff double in the third advanced into scoring position against Lara. Frias never made it to third in the inning.

Lancaster's best chance to score came in the eighth. Anderson De La Rosa singled to the hole at shortstop and moved to second when Frias singled into right. The inning was cut short when Rico Noel scalded a ground ball to the backhanded side of third baseman Jose Cuevas, who turned it into a 5-3 double play.

Bridgeport scored in the opening frame as D'Arby Myers reached on a high bounder to third which forced Sean Halton to make an off balance throw. Andrew Lambo singled him to third, and Myers scored on an infield single by Cuevas.

Two more runs scored off Nate Reed (0-4) in the third inning. Myers reached with one out on the only walk issued by the lefty in six innings. After Myers swiped second with two outs, Cuevas dumped a short single into right to drive home the run. Cuevas took second on a wild throw home and scored with Sean Burroughs singled into center.

Overall, the Bluefish piled up 12 hits, all singles, in the game. They added an unearned run off R.J. Hively in the seventh and two more on two singles, two walks and three wild pitches off Daniel Moskos and Cody Hall in the eighth.

Tony Abreu paced the attack with three hits and an RBI. Myers, who was 2-for-4 with a walk, scored three runs and drove in one.

The Barnstormers open a three-game series against Long Island Friday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium with Bryan Evans (3-2) on the hill against veteran big league right-hander Alfredo Simon. Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into Blue Ridge Cable 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:30.
