DUBUQUE, Iowa - Mike Szmatula continued his hot hand, and Arthur Brey was perfect in goal as the Dubuque Fighting Saints used two quick strikes to beat the Fargo Force 2-0 Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center in front of 1,813 fans. The Fighting Saints improved to 3-0-0 on the season with the victory.
Defenseman Matt Benning got the scoring going in the first period for the Fighting Saints. John Stevens stole the puck along the right-wing half boards, sending a pass to the right point to Benning. He fired a seeing-eye wrist shot that hit traffic in front, and redirected past Fargo goaltender Cameron Johnson blocker side. Benning's tally was his first goal with the Fighting Saints at 10:31 of the first period.
Dubuque didn't take long to extend its lead. Szmatula collected the puck in neutral ice, turned on the jets, and busted down the left wing into the Fargo zone. Szmatula fired a snap shot that beat Johnson over the shoulder, bulging the mesh and popping out of the net to give Dubuque a 2-0 lead at 11:40. Szmatula's goal was his fourth of the season, assisted by Frankie DiChiara.
The game saw no more scoring, as Arthur Brey collected his first USHL shutout with 21 saves, and made several stops on strong scoring chances for the Force. Brey picked up his second win between the pipes for Dubuque.
The Fighting Saints next game is on the road at Youngstown next Friday. The Fighting Saints will travel to Ohio for two games with the Phantoms on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop is slated for 6:15 p.m. both nights, and the games can be heard on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM.
