South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Comstock Park, MI - After a doubleheader on Tuesday evening, you could understand if the South Bend Silver Hawks and West Michigan Whitecaps were a bit sluggish for Wednesday's 11:00 AM start at Fifth Third Ballpark. However, the Hawks showed no signs of fatigue in jumping out to a 3-0 first inning lead on their way to a 6-1 victory in game three of the four game series.

Ender Inciarte set the tone from the beginning, beating out an infield single to lead off the game. After a one out walk to Zach Walters, the Silver Hawks had runners at first and second for Yazy Arbelo. The big man extended his league leading RBI total to 29 by lacing a single to right for the 1-0 lead. After a balk from Josue Carreno (LP, 1-4) scored Walters from third, Matt Helm blooped a single to shallow center, with the RBI bringing home Arbelo for the 3-0 lead.

West Michigan made it a two run game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring their lone run of the game against David Holmberg (WP, 2-3). Luis Castillo doubled, moved to third on a single, and scored on a sacrifice fly from James Robbins. Holmberg allowed just the one run on five hits while striking out four in his 6.0 innings on the mound, earning a victory for the second straight start.

The Silver Hawks had the answer, scoring a single tally in each of their next three at-bats. In the fifth, Walters homered to the opposite field to push the lead back to three at 4-1. The homer was Walters' fourth on the season and his 19th RBI, keeping him in second place on the team in both categories behind Arbelo.

Chris Jarrett's sacrifice fly scored Matt Helm in the sixth inning and Mike Freeman added a RBI single in the seventh against Michael Torrealba (ND) to round out the South Bend scoring.

Inciarte, Walters, Helm, and Raywilly Gomez all had two hits for South Bend, who has won for the sixth time in the last seven games to move ahead of West Michigan in the standings once again.

Blake Cooper (ND) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, bringing his current scoreless streak to 8.1 innings. Cooper's streak of consecutive batters retired ended at 19 - one behind Dan Taylor's season high of 20. Chris Odegaard (ND) pitched a scoreless ninth and has not been scored upon in 4.2 innings for South Bend.

The two teams wrap up the four game series on Thursday evening with a 6:35 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Jeff Shields (1-3, 7.25 ERA) will start for South Bend against West Michigan's RHP Kevin Eichhorn (1-2, 5.40 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:15 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
