Braves win marathon over D-Jaxx
June 17, 2005 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
The Braves outlasted the D-Jaxx in a 15-inning marathon in front of 5,579 fans at Trustmark Park. Mississippi scored a run in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the 15th to win the third game of this five-game series.
Gregor Blanco led off the 1st with a single up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Onil Joseph, and scored on a single by Scott Thorman giving the Braves a 1-0 lead.
Mississippi pitchers held the powerful West Tenn offense at bay for six innings but the D-Jaxx broke through with a run in the seventh. Casey McGehee led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Iker Franco. McGehee tied the score 1-1 when Jose Reyes singled up the middle.
After West Tenn tied the score in the seventh, the two teams stranded baserunner after baserunner for eight innings until the Braves got the winning run home in the 15th.
After Glenn Tucker struck out, Jonathan Schuerholz singled to left. Gregor Blanco then grounded into a fielder's choice that moved Schuerholz to third. Onil Joseph then hit a shot at first baseman Matt Craig that was too hot to handle. Joseph dove into first, just beating the throw from second baseman Ryan Theriot just as Schuerholz crossed home with the winning run.
Braves starter Roman Colon threw five shutout innings striking out three while walking zero batters, but did not factor into the decision. Ryan Basner (3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 $, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) pitched well, but was charged with a blown save. Paul Bush and Steve Kent combined to throw six shutout innings before giving way to eventual game winner Glenn Tucker. Tucker (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) improved to 3-2 on the year. For West Tenn, starter Ricky Nolasco (4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) came in to the game with zero losses on the season. He left the game in the fifth, trailing 1-0, but the D-Jaxx came back to tie the game to get him off the hook. Tally Haines (1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 K) fell to 3-4 in 2005.
The Braves will play the Diamond Jaxx in game four of this five-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Trustmark Park. Mississippi will send Chuck James (2-0, 3.41) to the mound versus Carmen Pignatiello (5-3, 2.69).
