Braves Win Final Home Game, 10-3

DANVILLE, VA- There were fireworks in the air and on the field of play tonight at American Legion Post 325 field as the Braves won 10-3 with homeruns from both Austin Riley and Ronald Acuna. Braves Starter Daniel Cordero went five innings allowing five hits and surrendered only three runs, one of which was unearned. Reliever Ian Stiffler pitched the final four innings and recorded his second save of the year, allowing only two hits while striking out four.

Bluefield would score first as the plated two runs in the top of the second inning. Blue Jays designated hitter Juan Tejada would reach on an infield single to lead off the inning. The next batter right fielder D.J. McKnight launched a two run homerun to right field to give the Blue Jays the 2-0 lead early.

Danville would answer back with five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead 5-2. Braves right fielder Ronald Acuna doubled right center field, and the Braves had a runner in scoring position to begin the inning. Two batters later, after Juan Yepez struck out looking, Braves catcher Carlos Martinez doubled to right field, scoring Acuna to cut the Blue Jays lead in half, 2-1. After the Martinez RBI double, Jacob Lanning singled up the middle into center field, advancing Martinez to third base. With runners at the corners, Yeudi Grullon executed a squeeze bunt, scoring Martinez to tie the game at 2-2 as Grullon reached first safely with Lanning advancing to second. Braves left fielder Jose Morel then delivered with a RBI double off the wall in right field, scoring Lanning and advancing Grullon to third base, and the Braves took the lead 3-2. Austin Riley then stepped up to the plate and grounded to third baseman Mattingly Romanin over threw first base and two runs would score to make the score 5-2 Braves after two innings.

Danville added another run in the bottom of the third inning on a moon shot by Ronald Acuna, with the ball traveling well over 400 feet, and the Braves extended their lead to 6-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Blue Jays would add a run to cut into the deficit, making the score 6-3 Braves. With two outs in the inning, D.J. McKnight reached on an error by Braves short stop Grullon. Deifferson Barreto, the Blue Jays second baseman, then sent an RBI double to center field, scoring McKnight from first base.

The Braves added yet another solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Austin Riley's home run to deep left center field measured 414 feet, and the Braves extended their lead to 7-3.

Danville would also add three runs in the top of the eighth inning, extending their lead to 10-3. The Braves would load the bases on three walks in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lanning, Didder, and Riley would all reach base on the free pass. With Jeff Campbell batting, a wild pitch got away from Blue Jays catcher Brett Wellman, allowing Lanning to score to make the score 8-3 Braves. Campbell then singled past a diving first baseman Christian Williams and the ball rolled all the way to the right field fence allowing both Didder and Riley to score to give the Braves the 10-3 lead.

With the win by the Princeton Rays tonight, the Danville Braves are officially eliminated from the Playoffs. Danville will travel to Kingsport to take on the Mets to wrap up the 2015 season. The Braves finished the year at American Legion Post 325 field with a 20-14 record at home and also will finish in third place in the Appalachian League East Standings.
