Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-hander Kevin Barry fired 5.2 scoreless innings and Richmond pushed across runs in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat Indianapolis, 2-1, Saturday night at Victory Field.

The Braves improve to 8-4 with the win, while the Indians fall to 10-4 overall. The Tribe suffers its first defeat since April 14 after reeling off five consecutive victories.

1B Barbaro Canizares smacked his first home run of the season -- a solo shot to left -- in the top of the fifth to put Richmond on the scoreboard. Then, in the sixth, 3B Willie Harris led off with a double to right, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and came plateward on SS Yunel Escobar's base knock through the left side.

Indianapolis scored its lone run of the night and threatened to knot the affair in the seventh. 3B Russ Johnson singled up the middle and RF Luis Matos was plunked before both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Johnson scored moments later on SS Brian Bixler's groundout, RHP Paul Bush (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO) ended the frame to recorded his second hold of 2007.

Barry (5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) picked up the win in his first decison of the year, while Braves LHP Will Startup (1.0 IP) earned his first save of the season.

Indians RHP John Van Benschoten (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 0-2.

The Tribe scattered just four hits in the contest, with LF Rajai Davis, C Ryan Doumit, 2B Luis Ordaz and Johnson all reaching base once. Richmond was led by Escobar, who registered a pair of hits and one RBI.

The clubs return to Victory Field on Sunday at 2 p.m., for game three of the four-game set. RHP Anthony Lerew is scheduled to start for Richmond, while RHP Marty McLeary is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.

The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m. The first 4,000 fans will receive an Indians Logo Baseball courtesy of Kleenit.
