Braves fall to Grasshoppers, 2-1

Rome, GA - The Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Rome Braves 2-1 in front of 2,170 fans at State Mutual Stadium. It was the first meeting of the season between the two clubs.

Greensboro jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Kevin Mattison drew a walk and later scored when Ben Lasater grounded into a fielder's choice giving the Grasshoppers a 1-0 advantage.

The Grasshoppers extended their lead in the fourth. Jeremy Synan walked and moved to third when Jake Smolinski reached on a fielding error by Zeke Spruill. A sacrifice fly by Paul Gran scored Synan making it 2-0 Greensboro.

Rome would end the shut out bid for Greensboro plating one run in the eighth. Adam Milligan singled to right followed by a base hit by Samuel Sime. Stephen Shults would then drive in Milligan for the lone run of the evening for the Braves to make it 2-1. Despite a scoring threat in the bottom of the ninth, Greensboro pitching held the Braves for the victory.

Brad Hand (4-10) gets the win pitching five innings, giving up four hits, and striking out five. Rome's Zeke Spruill (7-5) takes the loss going four innings giving up four hits but walking five batters. Andrew Loomis (1) earns the save.
