Richmond, VA- The Richmond Braves beat the Toledo Mud Hens 10-6 at The Diamond Saturday. Richmond pounded out 13 hits to win for the fourth time in five games.
The Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice ground ball by Jamal Strong and a three run homer by Dax Norris. The Hens rallied back in the third with an RBI double by Ryan Raburn and a two run triple by Alexis Gomez to trim Richmond's advantage to 4-3. Norris singled another run home in the third to make it 5-3. Raburn chased a run home with a single in the fourth to again cut the Braves lead to one. Carlos Mendez knocked in a run with a single in the home half to give the Braves a two run cushion. Toledo edged closer one more time in the fifth on a bases loaded walk to Brian Peterson that trimmed the Richmond lead to 6-5. The Braves batted around and again blew the game open in the fifth. Cesar Crespo doubled in a run, Wes Timmons knocked in a run with a sac fly, and Michael Ryan doubled two home to give the Braves a 1-05 lead. The Hens added one more run in the sixth on a Josh Phelps RBI double.
Scott Mullen picked up the win in relief. Franklin Nunez pitched three scoreless innings to earn a save. Hens starter Jordan Tata took the loss. Norris had three hits and four RBI. Bill McCarthy also had three hits for the Braves.
The Braves and Mud Hens square off Sunday at 2 PM. Brian O'Connor will pitch for the Braves against Zach Miner. The first 4,000 fans will receive John Smoltz bobbleheads courtesy of HCA Virginia and Lite 98. .
