The Worcester Bravehearts sent nearly 2,700 fans home happy by closing out a 3-0 victory over the Wachuesett Dirt Dawgs at Hanover Insurance Park in Worcester, MA last night. In the home opener for Worcester (2-0), the Bravehearts pitching staff shutout the Dirt Dawgs (0-3) to win thier 2nd game of the season.
The Bravehearts offense got started right away as outfielder Chad Miller (St. Leo/Sarasota, FL) stayed hot with a leadoff triple. Second baseman Rafael Bournigal (Belmont/Mulberry, FL) drove Miller in on a bloop single to centerfield, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
Wachusett couldn't get anything going off of Greg Stagani (West Liberty/Richmond, OH) as the Bravehearts starter lasted five innings while giving up no runs on seven hits and striking out six Dirt Dawgs. He picked up his first win of the summer.
In the 7th inning, designated hitter Zack Tower (UMass-Lowell/Auburn, MA) cracked a two-run homerun to dead centerfield that just cleared the fence to extend Worcester's lead to 3-0, which would hold up as the final score.
PJ Browne (Merrimack/Rutland, MA) took the loss for Wachusett as he went 6.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits while striking out six Bravehearts batters.
Worcester's Frankie Moscatiello (St. Thomas Aquinas/Rocky Point, N.Y.) finished the last four innings, giving up no runs and no hits, while also striking out seven batters in the process.
The Bravehearts stay at home tomorrow for a match up with the Martha's Vineyard Sharks at 7:05pm at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester, MA.
