Worcester Bravehearts News Release

WORCESTER - With a 5-3 win over the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, the Worcester Bravehearts inched themselves a little bit closer to grabbing the final playoff spot in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.

Wachusett took an early lead with three runs in the 3rd inning off Worcester starter Mike Bruemmel (Wheaton / Bridgewater). After shortstop Jon Kristoffersen's (Saint Peters / Jefferson, New Jersey) 2RBI single, first baseman Justin Silvestro (Wheaton / Waltham) hit an RBI single to push his team's lead to 3-0.

Bruemmel settled down and got the win after going six innings with four strikeouts and six hits allowed. Only one of three runs charged to Bruemmel was earned.

Worcester answered when second baseman Derek Gibree (Saint Leo / Largo, Florida) scored on a passed ball, and catcher TJ Riccio (New Haven / Port Jeff Station, New York) collected an RBI single.

In the 4th inning, Bravehearts right fielder Willie Allen (Lewis & Clark State / Boston) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and first baseman Zack Tower followed up in the 5th inning with an RBI single to put Worcester in the lead. The Bravehearts tacked on an insurance run in the 6th inning when Gibree ripped an RBI single to score Allen.

With runners on the corners in the 8th inning, Worcester reliever Logan Fullmer (Maine / Lebanon, Pennsylvania) forced an inning-ending double play and came back in the 9th for the save. The Dirt Dawgs loaded the bases with one out, but Fullmer struck out the final two batters to record his third save of the season.

Wachusett starter Steve Colella (UMass Dartmouth / Leominster) allowed four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Three out of four runs charged to Colella were earned, and he dropped to 4-4 with the loss.

The Worcester Bravehearts will enjoy a day off before returning to action against the Brockton Rox at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night, Aug. 4 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. Tickets for all future Bravehearts games are available at the Hanover Insurance Field box office, online at worcesterbravehearts.com, or by calling 508-438-3773.
