Worcester Bravehearts News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - After a stretch of seemingly dominant pitching performances by the Bravehearts staff over the past seven straight wins, they finally met their match against an explosive Seacoast offense Sunday afternoon. Starting for the Bravehearts was Brady Furdon (Wheaton/Natick, MA), who has been off to a solid start this season, but it was Connor Russell (Bates/Cumberland, ME) who collected the win for the Mavericks at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester, beating the Bravehearts 9-4.

The Mavericks struck first with a two-run shot from Kyle Pangallo (Barry University/Fort Lauderdale) in the first to set the tone. It then seemed this would quickly turn into an offensive battle, but one Braveheart run and just a handful of hits was the only action we saw over the next five innings.

Bravehearts got one back in the fourth when Matt Rothenberg (Harvard/Boca Raton, FL) drove home the first run of the game on a fielder's choice, making it 2-1 Seacoast.

Aside from allowing an early homerun, Furdon seemed to settle down as he went six innings as he had allowed just two runs and four hits come the end of the sixth inning. Furdon went out to start the seventh as they turned it over to the bullpen.

Worcester's Zach Whitaker (Saint Leo/Land O Lakes, FL) came in to pitch the seventh. After a slow offensive start for both teams, the Mavericks startled the Bravehearts with seven runs in the top of the 7th inning. As the defense slowly started to unravel with three errors in the seventh, the Mavericks took advantage off every opportunity they had, extending their lead to 9-1.

The Bravehearts offense seemed to struggle all day, getting most of their eight hits late in the game. Aside from the offensive struggles, several Bravehearts were still able to shine on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, including DH Zack Tower (Franklin Pierce/Auburn, MA) who had three hits and an RBI, as well as Rothenberg, who had a pair of hits himself.

The Bravehearts look to move on from this tough Sunday loss to end an otherwise extremely successful week. The Bravehearts (11-4) came into today on a hot seven game win streak and look to start an even longer one this Wednesday as they welcome the Pittsfield Suns (6-8) into Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field In Worcester, MA. First pitch is set for 7:05. Tickets for this game, and all future Bravehearts games, are available at the Hanover Insurance Field box office, online at worcesterbravehearts.com, or by calling 508-438-3773.
