Worcester Bravehearts News Release

BRISTOL, Conn. - Three days ago, the Worcester Bravehearts sat in 9th place in the league, last place in the FCBL West Division and were on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.

However, with a commanding 8-1 victory over the Bristol Blues to conclude the regular season on Sunday night, Aug. 9 on Muzzy Field in Bristol, Connecticut, the Bravehearts have climbed all the way up to 6th place in the standings, second place in the division and will compete in the playoffs for a chance to defend their championship title.

Bravehearts first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) scored on a double play in the 2nd inning to open the scoring. Third baseman Mike Coggeshall (Assumption / Shrewsbury) then scored on a wild pitch by Blues starter Tom Curtin (CCSU / Bristol, Connecticut) to give his team a 2-0 lead.

Curtin took the loss, as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. Curtin also allowed seven walks in the loss.

Worcester extended its lead to 5-0, and broke the game open in the 7th inning when left fielder Joe Caico (New Haven / Hopedale) smacked a 3-run home run to give his team an 8-0 lead. Caico finished 2-4 with three RBI, and Coggeshall went 2-3 with two runs scored. Worcester combined for 10 hits in the winning effort.

Bravehearts pitcher John Witkowski (Boston College / Melrose) was solid in his start, as he tossed three shutout innings while allowing just two hits. Each of Worcester's six pitchers on the night collected one strikeout and allowed just one run on seven hits with three walks.

Earlier on Sunday, the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs became the second of two teams to miss the playoffs, as they lost 4-3 on a walk-off single by Brockton Rox catcher Marshall Gei (Kentucky / Georgetown, Kentucky). The Torrington Titans also dropped a 9-4 matchup to the Pittsfield Suns in 10 innings, which allowed Worcester to leapfrog the Titans in the standings.

The Worcester Bravehearts will take on the Brockton Rox in a single-elimination first round game to kickoff the FCBL Playoffs on Tuesday night, Aug. 11 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton. The game time is to be determined.
