Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- With less than a week remaining in the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League regular season, the Eastern Division standings are still very much up in the air.

The Brandon Wheat Kings, who returned home to the friendly confines of Westman Communications Group Place on Saturday and scored an impressive 4-1 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings, enter the week with a record of 40-24-3-2 - good for 85 points and a third place tie with the 39-23-1-6 Swift Current Broncos. Both teams trail second place Moose Jaw by one point and the front running Regina Pats by five with three games remaining.

While the Wheat Kings host Prince Albert on Wednesday, before closing out the regular season with a home and home weekend series with the Pats, Swift Current travels to Saskatoon on Wednesday night before facing off against the Warriors in a home and home series this coming weekend. Moose Jaw meanwhile plays host to Pats on Wednesday.

After wholesale changes at January's WHL Trade deadline, the first place Pats enter the final three games of the regular season with a record of 42-21-4-2. Despite occupying second place in the East Division, the Warriors are last among playoff bound teams with 36 victories. Overall, Moose Jaw is 36-19-6-8. Fourteen of Moose Jaw's points have come as a result of overtime losses.

When it comes to the Conference, Calgary's lead shrunk to four points on Sunday night when Lethbridge dumped the Hitmen 4-3 before over 18,000 fans at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Lethbridge plays four more times this week while the Hitmen have two games remaining. Whoever finishes atop the Central will most likely face the fourth place finisher in the Eastern Division in round one of the WHL playoffs.

Sunday's win by the Hurricanes also moved them six points up on Brandon and Swift Current, leaving the Wheat Kings five points behind Kootenay and home ice advantage in the opening round of the WHL playoffs. This year's playoffs will get underway on Good Friday, March 21st. Playoff tickets in Brandon will go on sale Thursday, March 13th at 9 a.m. at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

Speaking of tickets, this Wednesday's game against the Raiders is the final "Rain Check Night" of the season and according to the box office, tickets are limited so be sure to redeem your unused tickets (dated December 14th to March 8th) at the box office as soon as possible. Last year's final Rain Check Game sold out 36 hours in advance of the game.

Wednesday's game will also feature the 2nd annual Nestle Purina Pucks 'n Pets Tennis Ball Toss, in support of the Brandon Humane Society.

On the ice, Saturday's game in Brandon featured the first ever WHL hat trick for 16-year old rookie sensation Scott Glennie. The Winnipeg product is averaging close to a point per game this year with 24 goals and 56 points in 57 games.
