Lone Star Brahmas News Release

WICHITA FALLS, TX - The Lone Star Brahmas got their year started in the right column with a pre-season win over the Wichita Falls Wildcats. The Brahmas surged for two third period goals to defeat the Wildcats 2-1.

A slow start from the Brahmas gave Wichita Falls a chance to get the offense going. In the final five minutes of the first period, the 'Cats capitalized on a rebound goal by Seamus Donohue from the left circle to make it 1-0 after the first. The Brahmas only managed to take four shots in the first 20 minutes of game time.

Period two was a different story for Lone Star. The team gained momentum and tripled their scoring chances in the middle period. Goaltender Erik Gordon had an impressive junior hockey debut, stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced. Gordon played the first 31:08 of the game and was relieved by Detroit's Alec Calvaruso, who only faced two shots in the remaining minutes of the second.

In the opening four minutes of the third period, the Brahmas finally netted their first goal of the pre-season. Defenseman Jack Zielinski cut through the neutral zone with speed and threaded the needle between two Wichita Falls defenseman to find Hunter Stanley at the opposite blueline. With room, Stanley was able to finish the play by beating the 'Cats goalie to his low stick side.

Moments later, the Brahmas took their first lead. With the puck chipped to the corner boards by Austin O'Rourke, Vladimir Studennikov made a play on the puck while being knocked down and he found returner Carson Kelley at center ice. Kelley fired a wrister top shelf to give the Brahmas a 2-1 lead.

Alec Calvaruso made a trio of impressive stops at the midway point on the third period to keep the Brahmas on top. After a handful of Wildcats penalties, the Brahmas were able to hang on and win 2-1. Calvaruso was credited with the win after stopping all nine shots he faced.

Lone Star takes on Wichita Falls again on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the NYTEX Sports Centre. Tuesday's game is free admission and the doors will open at 6. Be sure to follow the Brahmas on social media and call the box office at (817) 336-4423 for tickets to upcoming Brahmas home games.
