February 28, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins begin the week in third place in the tightly-contested Atlantic Division standings with their 30-21-3-6 record (69 points). The Black and Gold is 7-3-0-0 in its last 10 games, and finished the month of February with a record of 8-3-1-0. Five of the team’s eight wins during February were shutout victories. The Bruins’ special teams have played a key role in the club’s charge up the standings. The power play ranks second in the AHL with a 20.5% success rate (58/283), and leads the league on home ice (36/140; 25.7%). Providence was dominant on the penalty kill during the month of February, killing off 55 of the 60 shorthanded situations it faced (91.7%).

The Bruins are coming off a week in which they played four games in five nights, all on home ice, posting a 3-1-0-0 mark in those contests. Included in them was Friday’s 5-0 win over the Portland Pirates, the team’s ninth shutout win of the season. The Bruins also had critical division wins on Wednesday (2-1 vs. Lowell) and on Sunday (2-1 vs. Manchester).

Bruin forwards Brad Boyes and Keith Aucoin have been critical to the team’s surge over the last month. Aucoin had 5-9-14 totals in February’s 12 games, and has moved up to third on the team and 20th in the league with 17-34-51 totals in 53 games. The 26-year-old native of Chelmsford, Massachusetts had 1-4-5 totals last week, including one game-winning goal. Aucoin has points (8-14-22) in 14 of his last 16 games.

Boyes had 8-4-12 totals in 12 games during the month of February, including four game-winning goals. The 22-year-old native Mississauga, Ontario is tied for eighth in AHL scoring with 26-33-59 totals in 60 games. He leads the league with 16 power play goals and is tied for the lead with eight game-winning goals. Boyes, an AHL Second-Team All-Star in 2003-04, had 4-1-5 totals in last week’s four games.

The Bruins play two games this week, both key road games against division rivals. The action begins on Friday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m., when they face off with the Lowell Lock Monsters. The Bruins visit the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday, March 6 at 4:05 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on WDDZ AM-550 and online at www.providencebruins.com.
