VAL MAJEWSKI CALLED UP TO PLAY OUTFIELD WITH THE ORIOLES

BOWIE, MD - Val Majewski was called up by the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, August 18th the team has announced. Majewski learned of the exciting news shortly before Wednesday's Baysox game against the Reading Phillies and quickly drove down to Baltimore arriving during the O's game with the A's.

Majewski who is enjoying an off day today will rejoin the big league club on Friday when Baltimore takes on Toronto at Camden Yards at 7:35 p.m. The Baysox star could start as soon as Friday in one of the two corner outfield positions. The 23-year-old was available to play on Wednesday and reportedly would have run for future Hall of Famer Rafael Palmeiro had he reached base late in the game.

Majewski has excelled in Bowie this season hitting .307 with 15 home runs, 80 RBIs, 71 runs and 24 doubles. Majewski was the Orioles lone representative at the Futures Game in Houston. He was also the Bowie Baysox fan selection for the 3-A-Day of Dairy Eastern League All-Star Game played at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, MD. He participated in the Arby's Home Run Derby before the All-Star Game and advanced to the final hitting five home runs.

Replacing Majewski in the Baysox outfield is Branden Florence who was called up from Frederick. Florence was hitting .317 with the Keys while roping 12 home runs and 49 RBIs.

WALTER YOUNG TIES CALVIN PICKERING'S SINGLE-SEASON RECORD

READING, PA (Aug. 18) - With two home runs in the Baysox 8-7 loss to the Reading Phillies, 1B/DH Walter Young tied Calvin Pickering's Baysox single season record of 31 HRs, set in 1998. Young, who hit four home runs in his last five games, is also hitting .450 (9-for-20) as he continues to batter Eastern League pitching.

Through his nearly six-year minor league baseball career, Young, 24, has received acclaim for his power and was rated as the Orioles Best Power-Hitting Prospect by Baseball America before the season. Though his previous career best was 25 HRs playing for Single-A Hickory (Pittsburgh Pirates) of the South Atlantic League.

Young will look to break Pickering's record, as the Baysox travel to Altoona, PA for a four-game series with the Southern Division-leading Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates). In 16 games against Altoona, Young has hit four home runs, despite a .169 batting average.

The Baysox return home on Tuesday, August 24 to host the Akron Aeros. Only 10 home games remain in the Baysox 2004. Tickets for each game are still available at (301) 464-4865 or for a seating chart and more information go to the Bowie Baysox website at www.baysox.com.

BAYSOX TEAM NEWS:

HAYDEN PENN TRANSFERRED FROM FREDERICK; AVERETTE TO THE D.L.

On Tuesday, the Orioles transferred RHP Hayden Penn to Bowie as RHP Robert Averette was placed on the disabled list. Penn, who was the Orioles 5th round draft selection in 2002, has been impressive in his quick rise through the system. This season in between stops at Delmarva and Frederick, Penn has compiled a 10-6 record and a 3.64 ERA striking out 102 in 116.2 IP.

CHASING GABE MOLINA; SEQUEA LOOKS FOR HIS PLACE IN BAYSOX HISTORY

With the Baysox mired in a slump, closer Jacobo Sequea has been standing still at 22 saves. Sequea is just two saves shy of the Baysox single season record (24) set by Gabe Molina in 1998.

Sequea has already surpassed his personal best of 20 saves, which he set last after being moved to the bullpen in May.

MR. CLUTCH

OF Val Majewski is hitting .341 with runners on base, opposed to .258 without runners on. With runners in scoring position Majewski steps it up another notch, batting .364 with 63 RBI and 7 HR (132 AB). With runners in scoring position with two outs Majewski is batting .388 with 23 RBI and 3 HR (46 AB).

CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK HOME

The Baysox continue their trend of struggling on the road, as they are now 24-39 away from Prince George's Stadium, with last night's loss to Reading. While Baysox hitters actually hit five points better (.260 at home; .265 on the road) on the road, the story has been their pitching. At Prince George's Stadium Baysox pitchers have compiled a 3.57 ERA and held opposing batters to a .240 average. On the road the team ERA is 5.16 allowing opposing hitters to bat .279.
