Blues Travelers' John Popper to Perform Anthem March 1

PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, today announced that John Popper, a founding member of Blues Traveler and the band's front man with lead vocals and harmonica, will perform the National Anthem prior to the Friday, March 1, 2013 Red Claws vs. Erie BayHawks game. Tip off is at 7 PM, and tickets may be purchased by calling (207) 210-6655, online at www.MaineRedClaws.com or in person at the Red Claws Team Store located at 413 Congress Street in Portland.

A prolific songwriter, Popper has written a majority of Blues Traveler's songs, including "Run-Around" which won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In addition to traveling with Blues Traveler in support of their most recent album released in June, "Suzie Cracks the Whip", Popper performs as a solo act and has also appeared as a guest star in numerous television shows and movies including "King Pin", Howard Stern's "Private Parts" and "Blues Brothers 2000." He is also a frequent musical guest on the late night talk show circuit, including "The Late Show with David Letterman", "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and "Lopez Tonight".

Popper will be in Portland to take part in the F.O.G. Festival which takes place February 28, March 1 and March 2 at various Portland music venues. The Festival is expected to bring more than 100 musicians together, including Grammy winner Popper and Spin Doctors front man Chris Barron, for the love of jam-style performing and to raise money the Good Shepherd Food-Bank. The F.O.G. Festival has raised tens of thousands of dollars for hungry Maine families since its start in 2009.

Festival organizer, and the "G" in F.O.G., Greg Martens is a former tour merchandise manager whose friends include band members and industry icons.

"Our goal is to raise more money than ever for Good Shepherd," Martens said. "March 3, 2013 also happens to be my 50th birthday. This will be the largest birthday party ever with friends who love jam music and want to do some good while having fun."

EVENT TO INCLUDE FOUL SHOOTING CHALLENGE FEBRUARY 27: In addition to the festival, the event will include a foul shooting challenge on February 27 from 2-2:30 PM with Martens collecting pledges for every successful shot he makes. Red Claws' players will assist with the event which will take place at the Portland Expo following a Red Claws' practice. Pledges can be made by calling (207) 776-2822 and will be matched by corporate sponsorships. All proceeds will benefit the Good Shepherd Food-Bank.
