September 23, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) - Bridgeport Bluefish
(Bridgewater, N.J. - September 23, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (36-33, 67-72) finished the regular season with a victory against the Somerset Patriots (30-39, 65-74) by a score of 9-5 at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday. Bridgeport was 9-11 against Somerset this season.
Bridgeport scored one run in the first inning, six more in the third, one in the fourth, and another in the ninth to account for the Bluefish offense on the day.
Luis Lopez, Pedro Lopez, and Prentice Redman each drove in two runners. Eddie Rogers, James Simmons, and Angel Flores brought in the rest of the baserunners for the winning side. Redman contributed four hits on the day which included two homers. The shots were both to left; one in the fourth frame and the other in the ninth. He completed the season with 21 homers; but the outfielder remained tied with Wes Bankston for the most doubles (39) in one season in Bluefish history. Pedro Lopez contributed two hits on the day. Rogers, Simmons, and Brad Boyer each came up with one hit on the day while Joey Gathright scored two runs for Bridgeport.
Somerset's offense came from Collin Curtis as the outfielder had three RBI and two hits while the other runs scored ona Joe Holden RBI single and a wild pitch. Jeff Nettles, Johnny Drennen, Dan DeGeorge, and Holden each reached twice with Drennen scoring twice. Nettles and DeGeorge went to the plate once for the losing side.
Bridgeport starter, Wanel Mesa, completed four innings and did not factor in the decision. The righthanded hurler surrendered four runs on four hits and three walks while fanning five. Matt Pike (4-9) relieved Mesa and earned the win as the righthander worked four innings and allowed one run on four hits and one walk while fanning three batters. Rommie Lewis pitched a scoreless ninth while striking out one.
Somerset starter, Adam Champion (0-2), suffered the loss as the southpaw allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks. Four relievers combined to deliver the final six-and-two-thirds frames. Bridgeport produced two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning three.
