Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

Lancaster, PA- The Bridgeport Bluefish (7-4) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (5-6) 7-6 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Monday evening to take the opener of a four-game series in the Keystone State. The two ballclubs will face off six more times in head-to-head matchups over the course of the next six days.

Bridgeport went to work early against Lancaster Starting Pitcher Jarret Leverett, scoring five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, all coming with two-outs in the frame. Leading 1-0, Daniel Fields launched a three-run home run to right field to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors. The Bluefish outfielder now has seven runs batted in over the last two games played. Jonathan Galvez went back-to-back and belly-to-belly right behind Fields, blasting a solo shot to left, giving Bridgeport a 5-0 cushion after one-half inning played. Bridgeport added an insurance run in the top of the second when Designated Hitter Cory Riordan singled to lead off the inning, and later scored on an RBI ground by Jose Cuevas to give the Bluefish what seemed like a comfortable 6-0 advantage at the time.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Rainy Lara did not allow a run through his first five and two-thirds innings pitched, extending his scoreless streak to 12.2 innings pitched to begin his career in a Bluefish uniform, but a three-run home run off the right field foul pole screen by Vladimir Frias cut the Lancaster deficit in half to 6-3. The score remained the same as the game moved to the top of the eighth when the Barnstormers would get even. An infield single by Kevin Ahrens off reliever Zac Grotz and a two-out, game-tying two-run double by Darian Sandford off Drake Britton would knot the game up at six. In the top of the ninth, Alberto Callaspo would put Bridgeport back ahead with a solo home run to right off Losing Pitcher Cody Hall (0-1), and in the blink of an eye the 'Fish were back on top 7-6. David Carpenter would shut the door in the bottom of the ninth for his Atlantic League leading sixth save in as many opportunities.

Lara registered a no-decision, giving up three runs in six innings pitched. Leverett also did not factor in the game's final outcome, allowing six runs on ten hits in just three innings of work, surrendering two home runs. Drake Britton (1-0) earned the victory with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two. Callaspo led the way for Bridgeport with three hits.
