Bluefish Fall to Patriots

(Bridgeport, CT) The Bridgeport Bluefish (22-24, 53-63), suffered were defeated by the Somerset Patriots (23-27, 58-62) by a score of 9-3 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday. Bridgeport now trails Southern Maryland by five games in the second half Liberty Division standings.

Bridgeport was trailing 1-0 before Willis Otanez served a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning. His fourth shot with the home team gave Bridgeport the advantage. Luis Figueroa drove in the only other run for the Bluefish on Friday as he served an RBI single to right in the third frame to give the Bluefish a two-run advantage. Figueroa earned two hits on the night along with Luis Lopez. With a James Simmons single in the fourth, then outfielder has reached base in twenty of his past twenty-one games.

The game was tied at three heading into the seventh inning when the Patriots scored two on a double to left by Yunesky Sanchez to give Somerset the lead. The shortstop had two hits on the evening. Somerset scored four more in the eighth which was helped by a bases-clearing double to left by Adam Donachie. The starting catcher scored twice and had two hits. Joe Holden drove in two runners and Jeff Nettles brought in another.

Bluefish starter, Brad Thompson (3-4), suffered the loss as the righthanded hurler allowed five runs (four earned) on ten hits and one walk. Kyle Zaleski, Jesse English, and Rommie Lewis completed a combined two frames of four run, three hit, two walk, and one strikeout baseball.

Somerset starter, Derell McCall (8-5), earned the victory as the righthander delivered seven inning and surrendered three runs on eight hits while fanning three. Brandon Braboy and Brian Anderson combined for one strikeout and two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Bluefish continue a series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Somerset Patriots on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. The Fireworks Extravaganza is presented by Sysco. Bridgeport righthanded pitcher, Jonah Bayliss (2-7, 5.48 ERA) will be opposed by Somerset southpaw Doug Arguello (6-5, 3.54 ERA).
