Bluefish Drop Heart-Breaker, Lose Series to Lancaster

Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

Bridgeport, CT- After splitting the first two games of the series, the Bridgeport Bluefish fell to the Lancaster Barnstormers by a score of 7-6 on Sunday out at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The win was picked up by LHP Daniel Moskos (2-0) who pitched 0.2 innings in relief of starter Jarrett Leverett, who was lifted after only 4.2 innings.

Bluefish RHP David Carpenter was saddled with the loss after blowing his first save of the season.

With Bridgeport leading 6-4, Carpenter allowed a two-out, three-run homer to Lancaster third baseman Kevin Ahrens in the top of the 9th to give the Barnstormers a 7-6 advantage.

Carpenter had been 7-7 in save situations this season before giving up the lead the Lancaster, and many will wonder how the game may have progressed had 1B Sean Burroughs not committed a costly 9th inning error with one out and no one on.

After Lastings Milledge lead off with a groundout, LAN first baseman K.C. Hobson grounded to first base but the normally sure-handed Burroughs allowed the ball to go under his glove and into right field.

Carpenter would retire the next batter (Garrett Weber) via strikeout, but walked RF Trayvon Robinson with two outs after running the count full, which allowed the game to continue.

The next batter Kevin Ahrens would make the 'Fish pay for their follies, as he would launch a three-run homer over the left field wall to give Lancaster a 7-6 lead.

In the home half of the 9th Bridgeport would get the tying run to third and winning run on first, but Burroughs' chance to redeem himself was for naught, as he stung a line drive directly at CF Darian Sandford to end the threat, and the game.

RHP Cody Hall, the losing pitcher from the previous night, was credited with his second save of the season for Lancaster.

Bridgeport is off on Monday but resumes play on Tuesday night at 7:12 when the Somerset Patriots come to town, as the 'Fish find themselves needing to gain ground against the current division leaders.
