Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, Conn.) - Bridgeport Bluefish team officials today announced the signing of 9-year MLB veteran pitcher Jose Veras and infielder Angelys Nina.

"Jose has a ton of Major League experience," says Bluefish Manager Luis Rodriguez. "It will be great for him to bring that knowledge and professionalism into our clubhouse. Angelys has also been very successful throughout his career, so we're excited to add him to our infield."

Jose Veras joins the Bluefish for his 19th season of professional baseball and first in the Atlantic League. Last year, the pitcher played for Triple-A Fresno (Houston Astros) of the Pacific Coast League, where he struck out 16 batters in 19.0 innings. The 35-year-old was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 1998 by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and he made his MLB debut in 2006 with the New York Yankees. He pitched four campaigns with the Yankees, and has also spent time with the Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago Cubs. In 440 Major League games, Jose owns 23 victories with a 3.91 ERA, 438 strikeouts, and 27 saves in 423.0 innings of work. In 333 career minor league games, Veras owns a 50-51 record with 4.45 ERA and 814 strikeouts in 850.0 innings pitched.

Angelys Nina joins the Bluefish during his 10th season of professional baseball. He began the 2016 campaign with Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Phillies) of the International League. In 26 games, he hit two home runs with seven RBI and four runs scored. The 27-year-old began his professional career in 2007 after being signed by the Colorado Rockies as an undrafted free agent. Until this year, Nina has spent his entire career with the Rockies organization, reaching the Triple-A level in 2014 and 2015. In 829 career minor league games, Angelys owns a .283 batting average with 43 home runs, 381 RBI, 385 runs scored, and 127 stolen bases.

In a corresponding roster move, the Bluefish have traded pitcher David Anderson to the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League as the player to be named later to complete the previous trade for pitcher Paul Demny. The Bluefish have also placed catcher Connor David on the inactive list.
