LAKEWOOD, NJ - Luke Williams had an RBI double and scored on a throwing error after stealing second base to lead the BlueClaws to a 3-2 win over West Virginia on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.
The BlueClaws bullpen combined to throw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief with Casey Brown throwing 2.1 shutout and Will Hibbs getting the last four outs for his 19th save. Hibbs, who leads the league in saves, is now tied for second-most in BlueClaws history (with Matt Hockenberry from 2015 and BJ Rosenberg from 2009).
Lakewood (30-36/70-66) avoided a sweep in the three-game series with the Power (36-30/66-66). West Virginia is now a part of a three-way tie for first place with Hickory and Greensboro heading into the final four games of the season.
The BlueClaws opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI double by Luke Williams. Williams would then steal third and scored on a throwing error on catcher Yoel Gonzalez.
In the third, Arquimedes Gamboa tripled and came home on a Mickey Moniak SAC fly to give the BlueClaws a 3-0 lead. In the process, Gamboa extended his hitting streak to 11 games, over which he is now 18-42.
Power starter Stephan Meyer (3-1) gave up three runs, two earned, in 5.1 innings of work but took the loss.
The Power got on the board in the top of the sixth. Mauricio Llovera (2-4), who had thrown five scoreless innings, gave up a lead-off double to Adrian Valerio and an RBI single by Henrry Rosario to cut Lakewood's lead to 3-1.
The Lakewood starter was then removed in favor of Casey Brown, who gave up an infield single to Yoel Gonzalez that drove in the second run before Brown was able to escape further damage.
Llovera, a 21-year old from Venezuela making his final start of the season, gave up two runs in 5.1 innings with one walk and four strikeouts and earned the win.
Daniel Brito had two hits for the BlueClaws in the win.
The crowd on Thursday of 8.837 was the biggest of the season at FirstEnergy Park.
