BlueClaws Fall 8-5 at West Virginia; Get Swept in Three-Game Series

CHARLESTON, WV - West Virginia opened a five-run lead and held off a BlueClaws comeback, topping the BlueClaws 8-5 on Wednesday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep of Lakewood at Appalachian Power Park.

The loss drops the BlueClaws (20-26/60-56) to six games behind first place Hickory with 24 games remaining in the season. The Power (25-21/55-57), meanwhile, have won eight in a row overall and 12 in a row at Appalachian Power Park.

Clark Eagan led the way for West Virginia with four hits, falling a home run shy of the cycle. Both Eagan and Albert Baur, who homered, drove in three in the win.

Leading 2-1, the Power opened the game up with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. West Virginia got four straight two-out hits, including an RBI double from Eagan and a two-run home run from Baur, his seventh home run of the season.

Lakewood starter Mauricio Llovera, who took the loss to fall to 1-2, came out after four innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

The BlueClaws, trailing 6-1, began their comeback in the fifth. An Arquimdes Gamboa SAC fly made it 6-2 and then Jesus Alastre scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-3.

Power starter Oddy Nunez came out after five innings, allowing three runs. He earned the win to improve to 4-6 on the season.

Lakewood added two more in the sixth inning on a Gregori Rivero SAC fly and a fielding error on Power third baseman Oniel Cruz to cut the lead to 6-5. Both runs were charged to Matt Eckelman, though only one was earned.

Power reliever Pasquale Massoccoli threw two scoreless innings in relief before West Virginia added two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Raul Rivas and Darick Hall had two hits apiece for Lakewood in the loss.

The BlueClaws head to Delmarva to open a four-game series with the Shorebirds on Thrusday night. RHP Luis Carrasco (--) makes his BlueClaws debut opposite LHP Alex Wells (9-5).
