Vermont Mountaineers News Release

HOLYOKE, Mass.- The Valley Blue Sox scored three runs in the second inning on Sunday to top the Vermont Mountaineers 3-1 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Zach Goldstein ripped an RBI double, scoring Chris Starcun (Easthampton, Mass./American Int'l) to put the Blue Sox on the board in the second. The next batter, Kipp Moore (Waddy, Ky./Murray St.), hit a two-run single. Goldstein and Mark Grunberg (Hagerstown, Md./Towson) came across to score the Sox's second and third runs.

Vermont starter Christian Isbell (Scottsdale, Ariz./Arizona St.) pitched a complete game, and allowed only those three runs in the second inning on six total hits. Isbell walked two batters and struck out five.

Vermont's lone run came in the first inning when Ryan Fineman (Westlake Village Calif./Indiana) hit an RBI single, scoring Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood).

The Mountaineers had multiple opportunities later in the game, but couldn't capitalize. They left eight men on base in the game.

Greg Jacknewitz (Delaware, Ohio/Xavier) started for Valley. Jacknewitz was making just his second start of the season, but he pitched well, allowing one run on six hits over five innings of work. That earned him the win. Sam Donko (Cortland, Ohio/Virginia Commonwealth) got the save for the Blue Sox after pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings. Donko allowed just one hit, while walking a batter, and striking out one as well.

The Mountaineers fall to 18-24 on the season. They are locked in to a tight race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the NECBL Northern Division. Vermont wraps up it's regular season on Monday with a double header at Upper Valley. Because the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, who currently hold fourth place, don't finish their season until Tuesday, the Mountaineers' playoff fate likely won't be decided until late Tuesday night.

First pitch in the first game of tomorrow's doubleheader is set for 4:30 PM at The Maxfield Sports Complex in White River Junction. Game two will get underway at 6:30. Both games can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online though The NECBL Broadcast Network.
