Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Potomac, MD - Although the Wilmington Blue Rocs (6-16) played twelve innings against the Potomac Nationals (14-8) on Saturday night, it was not enough as the Rocks lost 3-2 in extras for their ninth straight loss. Roman Collins followed up his multi-hit night on Friday with the Rocks first four hit night of the season on Saturday despite the 3-2 loss in 12 frames.

For just the second time in their last nine games, the Rocks actually got on the board first, which occurred in the fifth inning. Collins received his second straight from manager Jamie Quirk, and the first year outfielder rewarded the confidence with a double to left in the fifth inning. After Collins doubled with two outs, Chad Johnson's single to center chased home the first run of the game, putting the Blue Rocks up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. However, Zach Lovvorn, who started the game on the Rocks on the mound finally broke in the bottom of the sixth inning when he let a run in on a double play ball to allow the P-Nats to tie the game at 1-1.

That's how the game would stay until the top of the tenth inning when the Rocks finally broke the stalemate. Brandon Downes doubled to centerfield with two down and came home on a single up the middle by Wander Franco to push the Blue Crew ahead 2-1 in extra innings. However, Marck MCCoy, who had held off the P-Nats in the bottom of the ninth inning could not do again the bottom of the tenth as Andrew Stevenson doubled to lead off the inning and then came home two batters later after a sacrifice bunt and a single by Jose Marmolejos to knot the game at 2-2.

The game would stay tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the twelfth when the Rock defense led them to their ninth straight loss. Matt Alvarez allowed a leadoff walk and then threw the ball away on a bunt single to the next batter to put men at first and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases and a force out at home to keep the bases loaded with one out in the tie ball game, Quirk called on Ti Hill to try and get the final two out, but Hill induced a ground ball to first which was thrown away by O'Hearn and allowed the winning run to come home for the P-Nats 3-2 win.
