Blue Crabs RHP Jim Ed Warden Signs With Mets

June 13, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are proud to announce that the contract of right-handed pitcher Jim Ed Warden has been purchased by the New York Mets. Warden, who started this season as the Blue Crabs closer, leads the Atlantic League in saves at the time of his departure.

This season, Warden has saved 13 games for Southern Maryland, and boasts a 1.13 ERA allowing just three earned runs in 24 innings pitched. He struck out 20 while only walking six in his Atlantic League debut, and opponents only hit .171 against the side-armer. His 22 relief appearances are currently second in the league.

Warden, who now has 43 saves in nine professional seasons, came to the Blue Crabs this season after stints with the Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals organizations. A sixth round pick of Cleveland in 2001, Warden remained with the Indians through the 2007 season, reaching Triple-A Buffalo. He split last season between Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Harrisburg with the Nationals. Warden has logged nearly 500 innings in his career, and has 434 career strikeouts. His 13 saves this season are already a career high. A season ago, he saved 7 games for Columbus, and nailed down 11 saves in for Double-A Akron in 2006.

Warden becomes the second Blue Crabs player this season to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization. On May 26, right-handed pitcher Matt DeSalvo's contract was purchased by the Tampa Bay Rays after he pitched just five innings in one start on the road against the Camden Riversharks on May 23. In the 2008 Inaugural Season, Blue Crabs starting pitchers Dan Reichert and John Halama each had their contracts purchased by the Cleveland Indians.
