May 26, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Florence RedWolves News Release

On a gorgeous Tuesday night at Sparrow Stadium on Cormell Field the Florence RedWolves opened up their 2015 Coastal Plain League summer season against their in-state and in-division rival, the Lexington County Blowfish.

Lexington County's Michael Bell (University of Georgia) led the game with a leadoff walk issued by Florence's left-handed starter, Michael Maiocco out of Flagler College. Bell advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then proceeded to steal third. Madison Stokes (University of South Carolina) drove in Bell with a groundout to the third baseman, allowing the Blowfish to take the one run advantage early.

In the top of the second the 'Fish struck again. The designated hitter, Tyler Lancaster (Spartanburg Methodist) was issued a walk. Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) would reach on an error by the RedWolves' first baseman, Ben Holland (Lee University). With runners on first and second, Jarod Williams would too reach on an error, this time by the third baseman. Mitchell Price out of USC-Aiken would groundout to the second baseman for an RBI putting the Blowfish up two nothing.

In the top of the fourth Lexington County would strike again, this time for two more runs. Mitchell Price would reach on an infield single after a great diving attempt by the RedWolves' third baseman, Chaz Pal (USC-Aiken). Price would steal second and reach third on a passed ball. Lexington County leadoff batter Michael Bell would then be walked, putting runners on the corners for Francis Marion University's JD Crowe. Crowe would single through the right side bringing in Price from third, putting Bell on third. The next Blowfish hitter, Stokes reached on another Florence error allowing Bell to score making it four to nothing in favor of the Blowfish.

The RedWolves would finally tack one up on the board in the bottom of the fifth as catcher Ray Lanners (Methodist University) doubled down the right field line. Lanners would be advanced to third on a [6-3] fielder's choice. Demetrius Jennings (Wofford College), and the "second leadoff" man for the RedWolves, was able to reach second on an error by the Blowfish shortstop, sending Lanners home for the run scored, bringing the contest to a 4-1 ballgame.

Things would quiet down for both teams beginning in the bottom half of the sixth and latter third of the game.

Florence went to the bullpen twice and snagged Tyler Haswell the freshman right-hander from the University of South Carolina and sophomore right-hander, Zac Burke from Francis Marion to come on in relief. Both pitchers would toss two innings each giving up just one hit, though Haswell surrendered a run in the top of the sixth due to yet another Florence error. Michael Maiocco, Florence's starter, picked up his first loss of the season making him (0-1). He finished the night with five innings pitched, giving up four hits, four runs and just two earned, along with four walks and four strikeouts.

Lexington County's starter, Taylor Weidner (University of South Carolina) hurled a solid five innings for the Blowfish as he picked up the win, making him (1-0) on the season. Weidner gave up just two hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. The Blowfish bullpen needless to say kept the bats completely silent as Eric Davis (USC-Aiken) and Avery Greer (University of North Georgia) would each throw two innings. Davis would walk just one and fan five, as Greer too walked only one and struck out three.

The Florence RedWolves now move to (0-1) on the season and in the Western Division of the Coastal Plain League.
