Blowfish Lose Fourth Straight

June 8, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

The Florence RedWolves batted around in two different innings to hand the Columbia Blowfish their fourth straight loss 13-3 Wednesday night at American Legion Field. The RedWolves scored a combined 11 runs in the third through fifth inning to blow things open.

The Blowfish (3-6) got off to an early lead as RedWolves (4-4)starter Hunter Adkins (1-1) walked Demontez Jones to lead off the first. Jones advanced to third on a Chase Vergason single and Zach Smith continued his hot hitting, driving in Jones with a single of his own.

Florence answered right back in the bottom of the first off Blowfish starter Josh Adams (0-1), scoring two unearned runs. This was the second straight game the Blowfish surrendered unearned runs in the first inning. Adams went 3.2 innings for Columbia, allowing 10 runs, eight of them earned, on eight hits.

Carlos Santana tied the game in the third with an RBI groundout, but the RedWolves would bat around twice in the next three innings to take the lead for good. Ryan Burt led off the fourth with a homerun and things got testy in the sixth inning when Adkins hit Burt in the helmet with a fastball. The two had words for each other and both benches were warned after the play. Adkins finished with six strong innings, allowing just three runs on five hits.

Ruben Tresgalo finished the final three innings for the RedWolves to earn his first save of the season.

Florence and Columbia had the two lowest fielding percentages in the Coastal Plain League headed into the matchup and defense was the difference in the game. Columbia committed three errors compared to none for the RedWolves.

The Blowfish look to avenge the loss in the rematch Thursday night in Columbia.
