Kamloops Blazers News Release

The Blazers (23-7-1-2) got a goal and a fight from newly acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson in a 3-0 shutout win over the Prince George Cougars (10-15-1-3). Cole Cheveldave stopped all 23 shots he faced, while Marek Hrbas and Colin Smith supplied the other two Blazer goals.

Marek Hrbas got the Blazers on the scoreboard in the first period. Brendan Ranford walked out of the corner and tried to stuff a puck past goaltender Brett Zarwony. Hrbas was there to clean up the rebound to make it 1-0 Blazers 5:08 into the period. The first period was full of penalties as the Blazers lost forward Aspen Sterzer to a major and game misconduct. Colin Smith set up JC Lipon for a sure goal shorthanded but somehow Zarowny got his paddle on the puck to keep it out. The penalties didn't allow for much flow as the Blazers held a 9-8 advantage on the shot clock.

Early in the second period the Blazers got some life as Joel Edmundson dropped the gloves with the Cougars captain, Dan Gibb. Edmundson won the fight, and the Blazers started to roll. Zarowny was strong all night as he robbed Tim Bozon who was all alone in front of the net. The Blazers got a bounce on their second goal as Colin Smith's centering pass off the rush was deflected in off a Cougar defender to make it 2-0. The Blazers outshot the Cougars 19-9 in the period.

The Blazers played the shutdown card in the third period eliminating the Cougars chances. Chase Souto set up Edmundson for a one-timer late in the period. Edmundson blasted it past Zarowny to give the Blazers a 3-0 cushion. The Cougars had no reply as the Blazers cruised to the victory.

Goaltender Cole Cheveldave earned his second shutout of the season with 23 saves. Brett Zarwony turned aside 30 shots for the Cougars.

The Blazers were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Cougars finished 0-for-5.

The Blazers will now hit the road for five straight games starting in Vancouver on Sunday, December 9th. They will play four games in Alberta next week beginning in Calgary on Tuesday, December 11th and finishing in Medicine Hat on Saturday, December 15th.
