Blaze Win in Extras
May 21, 2011 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The Blaze had its first extra-inning game of the year, and it was a good one! Bakersfield took an early 2-0 lead on Stockton, but the Ports scratched back to the game at 2-2 in the 7th. In the bottom half, the Blaze clubbed a pair of 2-run homers to take a 6-2 lead that, at the time, felt comfortable; Stockton, not to be denied, came right back with 4 of their own, and the game remained tied at 6 into the bottom of the 11th.
Jose Guzman (L, 1-1) walked Stephen Hunt to lead off the inning, and A.J. sacrificed him to second. After a strikeout of Brodie Greene and an international walk to Josh Fellhauer, Mark Fleury - in the game after Yasmani Grandal injured his leg - coaxed a walk to load the bases. Henry Rodriguez came to the plate, and fell behind in the count 1-2. But Guzman tried to sneak a fastball by Henry, and Rodriguez whacked it into rightcenter for a game-winning single. Rodriguez was mobbed at first base, and the Blaze finished off the Ports 7-6, winning 3 of 4 in the series and 4 of 7 on the homestand.
Pedro Villarreal gave up 2 runs in 7 strong innings to start the game, and Mace Thurman (W, 2-1) retired all 6 men he faced in the 10th and 11th to pick up the win.
