Blaze Kick Nuts out of Town, 5-1

June 27, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The run of futility for the visiting Modesto Nuts continued on Sunday evening, as a three-pitcher combination for the Bakersfield Blaze once again held the Nuts' bats in check, and though the shutout streak was snapped, the Blaze cruised to another easy win, 5-1, in the homestand finale, and a three games to one series win.

Tonight, Eddie Campbell (W, 8-5) led the charge with one of his most aggressive outings of the season. The Virginia Tech product was a bit wobbly in the 1st, walking two and allowing a run to come across on a two-out single. From that point on, Campbell settled in, attacking Modesto hitters for 6.0 frames of baseball; the southpaw did not allow another run, striking out six on the night while issuing just the two 1st-inning free passes.

For Modesto, Jack Wynkoop (L, 0-1) was tremendous for 5.0 innings. Unfortunately for the Nuts, Wynkoop tried to pitch the 6th, a frame that did not go as well. After allowing just a game-tying run on a Blaze sacrifice fly in the 4th, Wynkoop walked Arby Fields leading off the 6th, and Drew Jackson, Gianfranco Wawoe and Chantz Mack each followed with base knocks, the latter two scoring runs to give Bakersfield a 3-1 lead and end Wynkoop's night.

Jay Baum followed with his second sacrifice fly of the night off new pitcher Craig Schlitter for a three run lead, and Baum doubled home an unearned run in the 8th to cement the lead at 5-1.

Campbell departed for the 7th, and the combination of Vinny Nittoli and Darin Gillies finished the contest, with Gillies working a scoreless 9th in his Cal League debut.

The win is the third in a row for the Blaze, and the team allowed just one run over those three games, dropping the team ERA to just 3.86 on the season and moving a season-best six games over the 500 mark.

The Blaze set off on the road for a week of games in northern California beginning on Monday in San Jose in a 7:05pm contest. Dave Gascon will have the call for all seven road games before the club returns on July 4th for the big fireworks show.

Make sure to tune in every night at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio as the club tries to extend its road dominance into the second half.
