Blades Double Up Rebels
October 9, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
A 10-point effort by the Saskatoon Blades' first line lifted the hockey club to a 6-3 road victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night.
The line of Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK), Gaelan Patterson (Saskatoon, SK), and Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB) would end the night combining for 3 goals and 7 assists.
The Rebels opened the scoring on the power play five minutes into the game as overage forward Nathan Green picked up his third of the season.
Captain Hulak tied the game up midway through the opening frame with his third of the season past Rebels' goaltender Darcy Kuemper.
With two minutes remaining in the first, Burke Gallimore (Edmonton, AB) took a breakaway feed from Brent Benson (Weyburn, SK) and the second-year Blade made no mistake, giving the team their first lead of the hockey game.
Just under a minute later, the Rebels tied it up as Willie Coetzee put home his team-leading fifth of the season to close out the first period.
Wintoneak put the Blades back in front 3-2 with a snap shot goal in front of the Rebels' goal only 12 seconds into the second period.
The Blades then took a two-goal lead on the eventual game winner as Jyri Niemi (Hameenkyro, Finland) hammered home his third goal in the last two games on the power play.
Andrej Kudrna brought the Rebels within a goal midway through the second with his fourth of the season and it was 4-3 after two periods.
Overage defenseman Sam Klassen (Watrous, SK) put the Blades back up by two, putting a backhand shot to the back of the Red Deer net for his first of the season.
The Blades would then close out the scoring as Patterson went five-hole on Kuemper for his third of the season and securing a 6-3 victory for the road team.
New Blade goaltender Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB) got the start and made 14 saves for his first win in Blades' colours. On the Rebels side, Saskatoon native Kuemper made 35 saves on 41 shots on the losing end.
The victorious Blades now improve to a record of 4-2-0-2 for 10 points on the season and a first place tie in the East Division with Moose Jaw and Swift Current. On the losing end, the Rebels now have a 3-6-0-0 on the season for 6 points.
The Blades continue their road trip tomorrow evening in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes. The contest pits the Blades against a Hurricanes hockey club that eliminated them from last season's playoffs in a hard fought seven game series in the first round. The game can be heard game live on 92.9 The Bull with Les Lazaruk. The live video broadcast of the game is also available for purchase through WHL WebTV.
