Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The United States Hockey League and the Waterloo Black Hawks announced the 2009-2010 schedule on Tuesday, highlighted by two new franchises and realigned Eastern and Western divisions.

The Black Hawks will begin the new campaign in Green Bay on Saturday, October 3rd at the Resch Center. The meeting will be a rematch of the first-round Clark Cup playoff series between the teams in April. It will be the third time in the past five years that Waterloo has opened a season by visiting Green Bay. The home schedule kicks off a week later when the archrival Cedar Rapids Rough Riders visit Young Arena on Saturday, October 10th.

Other home schedule highlights include traditional Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve games. The November 26th Thanksgiving tilt in Waterloo will feature the Black Hawks and Rough Riders for the eleventh consecutive season. On December 31st, the defending Western Division champion Lincoln Stars will visit Party Town. The 2009-2010 campaign will also feature a Valentine's Day meeting with the Sioux Falls Stampede on Sunday, February 14th.

Black Hawks President Doug Miller says Cedar Valley residents "can expect a very fan-friendly schedule, including 15 Saturdays, nine Fridays, and two Sunday games at home this year. The Sunday match-ups will begin at 3:05, with all other home games starting at 7:05."

"There were numerous challenges with this season's schedule due to the addition of the two teams out East," said Miller. "This schedule is the product of a lot of hard work by everyone in the league, and the final schedule will make it very easy for families throughout the Cedar Valley and beyond to enjoy our games."

The two new teams in the USHL this season are a franchise in Youngstown, Ohio and the U.S. National Team Development Program (Team USA), based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Youngstown Phantoms are moving to the USHL after being among the top clubs in the North American Hockey League. Team USA played part of their schedule in recent seasons in the NAHL, while also meeting college opponents for exhibition match-ups and facing top international foes around the world.

To make room for its newest members, the USHL has realigned to two divisions of seven teams. The Des Moines Buccaneers have been shifted back to the Western Division to make room for the two new clubs in the East.
