Black Hawks Announce Futures Camps

May 13, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks held their first-ever Futures Camp in 2015. It was an event which proved successful in several ways, especially including the selection of Michael Ferrandino during Phase I of the 2016 USHL Draft.

Waterloo coaches got a close look at Farrandino in camp last August at Young Arena. They were impressed enough to follow him throughout the 2015/16 hockey season as he skated for the Chicago Young Americans. When the USHL Draft was held earlier this month, the Hawks picked the forward in the fifth round.

"Michael had the opportunity to make an impression, and he made the most of it," said Hawks Assistant Coach Steve Howard. "We might have seen him eventually during the winter, but knowing something about Michael before his season began gave us the chance to put our scouts on notice."

Waterloo has expanded the opportunities for this summer during the Black Hawks 2016 Futures Camps, which will be conducted at Young Arena for players born in 2001, 2002, and 2003 as follows:

- August 4-7: 2002 & 2003 skaters

- August 11-14: 2001 skaters

- August 14-17: 2001, 2002 & 2003 goalies

"Positive comments we received from players and parents who were with us last summer convinced us to provide new features and sessions this season," Howard noted, sharing some of the feedback:

"My son did not want to leave; he enjoyed the ice time, the competition level, and the coaches. It helps him understand his weaknesses and know what to work on in the upcoming season and beyond."

-Steve H., parent, Illinois

"Talking with your former and current players was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. I especially liked getting feedback on the bench...during our games."

-Tyler B., player, New Jersey

"My son attended three hockey camps this year and the Waterloo camp was far and away the best organized...[P]roviding feedback on the last day, face-to-face, is exactly what a player needs, in my opinion."

-Tom R., parent, Iowa

"Thank you for having me at the Waterloo Black Hawks prospects camp! I learned a lot over the weekend and I will keep working hard to get to the USHL."

-Jacob M., player, Illinois

Skaters from across the country who take the ice during the August 4th and 11th camps will participate in six one-hour "mini-games"- one more than last year - as well as participating in at least one off-ice training session. A practice session with Hawks coaches has also been added. Members of the Waterloo coaching staff and Black Hawks alumni will direct all activities.

The August 14th Goalie Camp will be directed by Black Hawks Goalie Coach Chris Economou.

Registration for the Black Hawks 2016 Futures Camps will be accepted immediately. The $450 camp fee for the August 4th and 11th camps, or $525 for goalies, includes all midday and evening meals. The deadline for receipt of registration materials is Tuesday, July 19th.

See the Black Hawks 2016 Futures Camp and Goalie Camp flyers for more details, including basic schedule information, terms, and conditions. To register, visit the Black Hawks' offices at Young Arena or call (319) 232-3444. A detailed session schedule will be available to participants at a later date.
