Today's Game
Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons host the Rochester Red Wings for the 19th Annual KeyBank Independence Eve Celebration at Coca-Cola Field (6:05 p.m.). This is only a one-game series as the Herd will return to the road tomorrow in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Buffalo is coming off a 4-4 roadtrip to Gwinnett and Charlotte.
Independence Eve Game
This is the 19th consecutive year of the Bisons Independence Eve Celebration. The Herd is 6-12 in this game since 1995 with last year's 5-4 walk-off win over Durham snapping a five-game skid. The Bisons have hosted Rochester seven times for the Independence Eve Celebration, but have just one win against the Red Wings (7-1, 2005).
Thruway Cup
The Bisons are atop the 2013 Thruway Cup standings with a 9-5 record. Buffalo is three games up on both Rochester (7-9) and Syracuse (6-8). The Herd is 5-3 against the Red Wings this season, but have not faced them since a four-game series split at Frontier Field, April 27-30.
Roster Move
The Blue Jays have recalled RHP TODD REDMOND from the Bisons today. He was scheduled to start tonight for Buffalo and is 3-1 with a 5.06 ERA. Toronto has designated RHP CHIEN-MING WANG for assignment after going 1-1 with a 7.13 ERA in five starts.
Today's Starter
RHP CLAUDIO VARGAS will make his 13th start of the season tonight. The veteran has worked out of the bullpen in his last five outings with a 4.15 ERA. Vargas is 5-5 with a 5.54 ERA as a starter this year, including a victory in his last start, June 8 against the RailRiders. In that game, he allowed four runs in 6.1 innings of work with six strikeouts.
All-Stars
2B JIM NEGRYCH and DH MAURO GOMEZ were named starters for the 2013 International League All-Star Team. Negrych ranks 3rd in the IL in average (.327), T5th in doubles (24) and T6th in on-base pct. (.394). Gomez has an IL-best 24 homers, tied for 2nd-most in all of minor league baseball. He also leads the Bisons with a .563 slugging pct.
Bisons Bits
INF MAURO GOMEZ (.563) and INF LUIS JIMENEZ (.545) rank 4th and 5th respectively in the IL in slugging pct...The Bisons are now 5-1 in extra-inning games...OF KEVIN PILLAR brings a nine-game hit streak into tonight's game over which he has averaged .400 (16-40).
Blue Jays Update
The Blue Jays (41-42) fell to the Tigers on Tuesday, 7-6. OF COLBY RASMUS had a double and a home run to go along with four RBI. The Blue Jays take on Detroit in their rubber match tonight at 7:07 p.m.
